The Fun Is In The Getting...
Remembering A Great Truth!
- Libby Reed -
Today as I watched my cat Macho do one of his favorite things – turn the trash over to get something out of it – it reminded me of a great Truth – The Fun Is In The Getting Of The Goal.
In order to not have trash strewn all over the floor, I gave him what he was fishing for. He ignored it. I tossed another item he had been fishing for and it accidentally landed inside an open box. So I threw another one on the floor beside him. He continued to fish the one out of the box. He had a great time fishing that trinket out of the box. When he finally got it out, he then noticed that there was an identical one lying on the floor beside him all the time, the second one I had thrown. He immediately went back to the full trash basket to fish again.
The point is: No matter how much stuff we have, how much we have accumulated, we always want more, because it is in the “getting” of it that is the fun.
To the person who has fame, fortune and all that this life can provide, we find they are almost always, unhappy! I often think of Elvis Presley, the King. Here was a person who had what we often think we crave, yet he had to down mega doses of drugs and alcohol every day just to find some enjoyment. He was at the top, there was no place left to go. And, that my friend, is what happens to lots of us in life, and all through out our lives.
I remember in my early twenties, I was deeply depressed. I went to a psychiatrist for depression. I am sorry to say, this man with his diploma in medicine and knowledge was as ignorant as was I as to my reason for being so depressed. The truth was, at age 22 I had achieved every goal I had ever set for myself. I was married, I had a lovely home and beautiful furniture, and a husband who made a good income. What more could a person want? And this was the problem, I had to set new goals for my life, for none of us are happy unless we are “working” toward achieving something in our lives.
My heart goes out to all those people’s lives who have been devastated by the hurricane Katrina, but I know that most of these people have never felt more alive, more grateful to be alive, and the most grateful for the little, however little, they have been able to salvage from this horrendous loss. Blessings they had always taken as granted was swept away in hours. The home they wanted to improve or enlarge is now gone. The clothes that weren’t even appreciated are now gone. The life they had is now gone, possibly even their jobs, their savings, and their way of life.
I know as a country, all of us will pull together to help these people. Our prayers will go out to them, as they never have before. We will share our money, our time and our energy to help these thousands of people who have been devastated by this natural disaster. And in this is our blessing – those of us who are not victims of this disaster – all that we give, we give to ourselves first! Today we are a little more thankful, a little more grateful, and a whole lot happier that we are not one of those people suffering the consequences of this natural disaster.
As you work today toward some goal, be it baking a cake, weeding the flowers, washing the dirty clothes, be in the moment NOW, be grateful NOW, enjoy, have fun in the activity of getting – for it is never the destination that brings joy, it is in the journey. Have a wonderful journey today!
